Meet Paul Henry, an engineer working in the Olympic Park.
What do you do?
“I am a site engineer and responsible for all of the technical information on site. I provide lines and levels for the builders and make sure that work is carried out to the drawings.”
When did you start working on the site?
“I began in 2010. Before that I studied Civil Engineering at Cardiff University. I grew up in Tower Hamlets and as a boy I used to visit the family when they worked here on the Pudding Mill Lane industrial estate. I know the area really well.”
What do you like about working on the Olympic Site?
“I like being part of it all. The Olympic Park is a huge landmark and will definitely go down in history.”

An engineer on a construction project aims to turn the plans of the designers into reality. They take responsibility for the construction work as it happens. Once the plans are ready, an engineer uses their skills and expertise to organise the workforce and all the materials so that the project is run safely, on time, and keeps to budget.
Duties of an engineer:
- work closely with the design team
- carry out any changes which need to happen
- work with a range of people from clients, the construction crew, designers and other engineers
- oversee many aspects of the project including the delivery of supplies on time, scheduling the work, making sure the work is to a high standard, working with all the contractors on the project
Knowledge and Skills:
- able to make judgements and solve problems
- able to explain plans and work schedules
- able to communicate with a broad range of people
- understanding of health and safety issues
- good understanding of design and construction processes
