Students at Swanlea School in Tower Hamlets today celebrated the Olympic Truce with Andy Turner, World Athletics Championship Bronze medallist.
Young people celebrate the Olympic Truce
21 Sep 2011
‘Get Set for the Olympic Truce’ offers young people the chance to learn about the Olympic Truce and to take part in sporting and cultural activities which help encourage peace and truce in their schools and communities.
As part of the launch, students at Swanlea school (a member of the Get Set network) worked together to explore the themes of the Olympic Truce. They took part in a creative workshop to develop design ideas for a new London 2012 Olympic Truce pin badge and came up with ideas about how they can promote the themes of the Olympic Truce within their school and community.
The Olympic Truce originated at the Ancient Olympic Games when a truce was called to help athletes travel to and from the Games safely. The Olympic Truce was reintroduced to the modern Olympic Games in 1992 with the aim of using sport to help promote sport, conflict resolution and to build bridges between communities.
‘Get Set for the Olympic Truce’ resources include films, assembly materials and activity ideas developed to encourage young people to debate and discuss the themes of the Olympic Truce and to promote friendship and mutual respect through sport or culture in their school. From today these resources will be made available to every school and college across the UK through the official London 2012 Education Programme, Get Set goes global.World Athletics Championship, Bronze medallist, Andy Turner said: ‘The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a fantastic demonstration of how the world can come together and compete in peace. I think sport is a brilliant tool for bringing young people together. It is fantastic to see young people living so close to the Olympic Park and around the UK getting involved in this initiative.’
‘I am delighted to see LOCOG embracing the theme of Olympic Truce across sport, culture and education and providing so many opportunities for young people and other members of the community to help spread the word about the Olympic Truce.’
Later today, The ‘Peace One Day’ concert which is part of the London 2012 Festival and features Razorlight, Eliza Doolittle and short films made by young people as part of the Film Nation Shorts project, will take place in North Greenwich. Students from schools in the Get Set network have been invited along to enjoy the celebrations.
