Using poetry to inspire competing athletes and viewers of the Games.
Winning words 2012 poetry initiative goes nationwide
7 Oct 2011
Winning Words will bring the dynamic and immediate medium of poetry into the Olympic Park, public spaces, schools and local communities, inspiring the whole country to create new and exciting contexts for poetry.
The programme was launched today at the Globe Academy in Southwark (a member of the Get Set network). Students at the school enjoyed exploring the interactive Winning words website which is full of ideas and interactive games about poetry.
The Generator is a new, interactive online poetry game for Primary and Secondary Schools, created as part of a wider initiative to celebrate and promote poetry in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. Using words from a bank of poetry inspired by Olympic sports and ideals as inspiration, students can work together to explore different kinds of poetry, write their own poems and perform their final creations in front of their class. The game offers a new approach to teaching poetry in the classroom and taking poetry off the page.
The ‘Inspiring words’ section of the site offers a huge bank of poems inspired by the Games, linked to different sports, venues and Values.
Awarded the Inspire Mark, Winning Words, is part of London 2012’s education offer to schools across the UK that will support young people in exploring how sport brings the world together, Get Set goes global .
The programme is also part of Get Set plus.
