More than 700 schools across the UK have already registered to take part – and more are wanted.
Primary schools in Scotland and the North East are urged to join the Communication Triathlon

Primary schools throughout Scotland and the North East of England are being invited to join the dozens in the region already signed up for the UK’s first national Communication Triathlon for schools.
The programme encourages children to take part in three London 2012 Games -themed speaking and listening activities around Thinking, Talking and Teamwork. It is split across 4-7 and 7-11 year olds. Activities can be undertaken by a class, a year group or a whole school over the course of a week or even a day.
Liz Johnson, 100m Breaststroke gold medal winner at the 2008 Paralympic Games, who helped to launch the Communication Triathlon, said: “Having competed in various countries and had the opportunity to meet a range of people, I know how important these communication skills are – both in education and in everyday life. The Communications Triathlon enables children to learn in a fun environment and I’m sure it will be of great benefit to those participating for years to come.”

The Communication Triathlon is part of Get Set plus . Participating schools are encouraged to join the Get Set network by 16 December 2011 to claim their allocation of tickets to the London 2012 Games for students aged 10-18.

Two schools taking part in the Communication Triathlon were entered into a competition to win a visit from a London 2012 hopeful.
Children and staff from Percy Hedley School in Newcastle and St James’s Primary in Scotland enjoyed a visit from Liz Johnson, 100m Breaststroke gold medal winner at the 2008 Paralympic Games.
Lynn Watson, Headteacher from Percy Hedley School , said, “We are all really thrilled to have been chosen by Openreach to receive a visit from Liz Johnson. For our pupils who have cerebral palsy and speech, language and communication difficulties, to hear from Liz about how she has overcome her difficulties to achieve her best, and a gold medal, will be really inspiring. All our pupils really enjoyed the Communication Triathlon and we are already looking forward to our next Communication Triathlon!”
Ms. Guthrie from St James’s Primary, Scotland, said, “Our pupils really enjoyed working on the Communication Triathlon and we think it is fantastic that their efforts have been recognised. The whole school got involved and the children had so much fun learning in an active and motivating way. Parents also commented on how engaged their children were in the project.”
