Shine a Spotlight
4 May 2011

Cassy, a pupil from Middle Park Primary School in Eltham, southeast London is living the Paralympic Value of determination and has been rewarded with a visit from the London 2012 Paralympic mascot Mandeville!

Members of the Get Set network were invited to Shine a Spotlight on a student by nominating them for living one of the Olympic or Paralympic Values.

Cassy from Middle Park Primary school is the first to have been selected by a panel of judges for winning the primary schools competition.

Cassy loves sport and regularly enters Judo competitions. Despite having had her right foot amputated, Cassy has fought a lot of her bouts against able-bodied opponents and has picked up some impressive medals and trophies along the way. The school held an assembly in her honour, and Cassy along with three others pupils gave an impressive judo demonstration before Mandeville made a surprise visit. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh,’ “ Cassy said when recalling the moment she met Mandeville. The school is very proud of Cassy and believe that she epitomises the Paralympic Value of determination.

Six more students have also been selected from the shortlisted entries to receive visits from Wenlock or Mandeville for living one of the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

Sean Clark from Canmore primary school was selected for living the Value of Respect.

Calum Japes from Osbaldwick primary school was selected for living the Value Courage.

Nansi Dingle from Ysgol Llangynfelyn was selected for living the Value Excellence.

Ryan Banning from Kingfisher Regeneration Centre and Michaela from the Bridge short stay school were selected for living the Value Equality.

Jill Nelis from Dundonald primary school was selected for living the Value of Friendship.

All of the students were very excited and shocked when they found out that one of the London 2012 mascots was going to visit their school to say hello!
