Michelin chef helps school aim for Olympic glory
1 Mar 2011

Get Set to exercise your tatse buds is Get Set’s exciting new competition that offers a unique and exciting opportunity for children and young people to cook their way to the London 2012 Games.

Students at Ilkley Grammar School have launched the competition in their school with the help of a michelin star chef! The students were asked to create two recipes that would help an Olympic and Paralympic athlete to stay in peak fitness; one inspired by the UK and the UK’s culture and one with an international flavour. The ultimate prize is seeing the meal on the menu during the London 2012 Games.

During the session Simon, Michelin Star chef at The Box Tree Ilkley, gave pupils from Year 10 tips and advice on creating the perfect meal through his experience advising on how to use the freshest ingredients, and emphasised the importance of using local suppliers.

Simon Gueller said “As a keen sportsman and chef I was thrilled to come along and give the children some tips on creating the perfect meal for elite athletes competing at the Games. London 2012 will be the perfect showcase for a Yorkshire inspired dish and I hope that the children go away filled with ideas and we see many entries from Yorkshire”

Helen Druett and Kay Emsley, Joint Heads of Food Technology at Get Set registered Ilkley Grammar School said “it was fantastic that Simon could give up some of his time to help the children today. The competition is another great way we can be involved with London 2012. We can use the competition for teaching and learning about healthy lifestyles, the students also get some inside knowledge and I know they are all looking forward to putting in their entries.”

Gary Verity also said “We have seen many schools from Yorkshire visit the Olympic Park and win visits from the London 2012 mascots as members of the Get Set network, but as Yorkshire is so famed for its food and drink it would be fantastic to see a Yorkshire meal on the menu during the Games in London.”

The school will be using this competition to support their application for the Get Set network.
