London 2012 Paralympics

Get Set to get creative!

The Olympic rings are one of the most instantly recognised emblems in the world.

The five interlocking rings represent the potential for sport to bring the world together. Contrary to popular belief, the five different coloured rings – from left to right, blue, yellow, black, green and red – are not intended to represent the five continents. The five colours together with the white background, represent the colours of the flags of all nations.

The design of the Agitos, emblem of the Paralympic Movemnet, is based on an asymmetrical crescent. The word ‘Agitos’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Agito’ meaning ‘I move’.

Your challenge:

Create and display your own Olympic rings and Agitos made from a range of collage materials.

What ideas can the students come up with for displaying their finished collages in an eye catching way to display in unusual places in the school and/or local community?

Students could do further research about the history and meaning of the Olympic Rings and the Agitos before trying out their designs.

Work in teams to discuss and agree where to display their finished collages.
Take a theme for the collage and use materials to reflect that theme, such as:

  • Spirit in motion
  • I move
  • A Values word such as respect, friendship, determination or equality.

Push beyond…

  • Challenge students to create the two emblems in a completely different medium, for example, textiles, natural materials or recycled materials or as a 3D version to suspend from a ceiling
  • You could involve the whole school – how about an inter-year challenge for the best sample design?
