Gosden House School sports day
16 Aug 2011

A member of the Get Set network enjoyed hosting a special guest at their sports day!

Gosden House School’s sports day got an added boost this year when Olympic mascot, Wenlock, joined in the fun. Sue Jobling, Head of PE at the Surrey school said ”His visit made all the difference as the whole school took part in Olympic themed activities, including discus and high jump”.

Sue entered her school in the London 2012 Olympic Mascot Competition run jointly between SmallSteps4Life and LOCOG’s Get Set Education programme.

The aim of the competition was for children to take on board one healthy challenge based on the three principles of SmallSteps4Life: Healthy Eating, Feeling Good and Getting Active. The challenge, completed over a minimum of 4 weeks, could be done by a class or the whole school. In order to win it had to be creative and effective. The competition was open to all primary, secondary and special schools in England.

Gosden House was one of three winners, the others being: Northgate Primary School in Crawley and Moat Community College in Leicester. All of them received a visit from one of the Olympic mascots in the summer term.

PE teacher Hazel Shaw from Moat Community College, Leicester said: “It’s been fantastic to have Wenlock with us. The younger ones in particular were excited to see him and that in turn helps to make them enthusiastic about the Olympics and exercise.” Maryam Abdinor, 12 year old pupil at Moat Community College, said: “I really enjoyed doing the star jumps in the morning. It’s made me think about what other exercises I could be doing to stay fit and I might take up more swimming because that’s fun.”

If you’d like to encourage your school to get active and be healthier then log in to SmallSteps4Life to get inspiration about different challenge ideas.

SmallSteps4Life aims to help young people take small, manageable steps to improve their health and wellbeing. It’s a school-based programme which encourages children to plan, design and participate in challenges based on the themes of eating well, getting active and feeling good. By being involved in the decision-making process, children are more likely to be motivated to sustain the change in behaviour.

Schools that participate in this project are encouraged to join the Get Set network for even greater reward and recognition from London 2012.
