The ‘Get Set Network school of the month’ is…St Machar Academy in Aberdeen!
St Machar Academy in Aberdeen has been selected as the first ever ‘Get Set Network school of the month’ for their outstanding commitment to living the Olympic and Paralympic Values.
Here at St Machar Academy in Aberdeen, we have been promoting the Olympic and Paralympic Games since the 1000 days to go milestone to London 2012. Along with our International Inspirations partner Cultura High School in Johannesburg, South Africa, we have begun to see the work which will develop as a crucial part of the schools’ plans to take the Olympic and Paralympic values to an international level within our community. During the last two years, we have been increasing the awareness of London 2012 with staff, pupils and the community by organising events and creating wall displays to mark significant dates. We are not only proud, but extremely privileged to have been selected as the first ever ‘Get Set Network school of the month’.
The school was selected as a result of a blog that was posted by a student at the school. It outlined the schools involvement in the UK School Games. Two students volunteered alongside 20 young leaders representing 10 different countries as part of the International Inspiration programme. Their role as a volunteer included, carrying equipment, marshalling athletes and clearing the floor space for sports such as volleyball, athletics and cycling. While taking on this role they also had the opportunity to get to know some amazing people from all around the world. The school will receive an athlete visit as a reward for their efforts.
