Let's Get Cooking Around the World launches!
26 May 2010
Today, Get Set network member, Eldon Junior School in North London, hosted a special event to launch ‘Let’s Get Cooking Around the World’. Students learned Portuguese while making mango and banana smoothies from Brazil with Olympic champions Jonathan Edwards and Frances Houghton.
‘Let’s Get Cooking Around the World’ is part of Get Set + and is a really fun way to learn languages while preparing delicious food from different countries that have links to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. You could learn Hindi while cooking Chicken Rogan Josh, French as you make Pumpkin Soup from Canada, or Spanish while preparing a One-Pot Vegetable Chilli from Mexico!
A Year 4 pupil from Eldon Junior School said: “We really enjoyed making smoothies with Jonathan Edwards, we learnt Portuguese at the same time and he even showed us his medals! It’s a really fun way to learn about the Olympic and Paralympic values, it was a really great lesson.”
Jonathan Edwards said: “The development of language skills couldn’t be more important as we prepare to welcome the world to the Games in 2012. Hosting of the Games gives us a great opportunity to use links with the 205 competing nations to inspire young people to develop their language skills. ‘Let’s Get Cooking Around the World’ is taking that opportunity one step further by incorporating cooking and healthy eating into an exciting programme that I’m sure will make learning languages really fun and motivating for students.”
The project is led by the School Food Trust and all the recipes are available to download for free.
