Tenth FE college joins the Get Set network!

Carmel College has become the tenth FE college to join the Get Set network!
In recognition of their commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values, they were awarded their Get Set network plaque and certificate by Craig Heap, Olympian and Commonwealth Gold Medallist, who gave a talk to students about the personal triumphs in his career. Craig said: ‘Students at Carmel College are excellent examples of how London 2012 is helping to spark young people’s imagination and inspiring them to get involved and make a difference. I hope they will motivate other young people to join their journey.’
Over several months Carmel has been engaging with the Values of the Get Set Network thanks to the work being led by Carmel’s Further Education Sports Coordinator, Jamie Hampson: “The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students and staff. It also gives us the chance to link with other schools and colleges both in the UK and around the world to promote how we are preparing for the Games in our college and country.”
From now to the start of the Games, Carmel plans to offer many different activities both through their enrichment programme and through the curriculum. On the cards are: the annual Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week; the hosting of a Games-themed sports day; a wider range of sporting options to get more of the students involved in a physical activity each week; and further developing the strong links the college already has with schools abroad through the foreign exchange programme. Carmel’s student Sports Leaders will also be working with local primary schools to provide themed Olympic Workshops to encourage younger children’s enthusiasm towards the Games.
Principal Rob Peacock, commented: “We are delighted to be a part of the Get Set network. The Olympic and Paralympic Values are the values on which Carmel College is built and for which we are so well known. The opportunities provided by the network will help inspire and motivate our students to reach out around the world and feel part of the 2012 games. I am confident they will rise to the challenge.”
