Get Set network schools meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu!
4 Feb 2010
Archbishop Desmond Tutu visited the Olympic Park today and also met with students from schools and colleges in the five Host Boroughs that are members of the Get Set network.
He talked with them about the importance of inclusion and unity and his belief that hosting the Games in East London was a great way to bring the diverse community together.
Frankie from Marion Richardson Primary School, Tower Hamlets said: “Today I met a very special man called Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. Before the meeting I thought he might be serious and perhaps grumpy but it was the opposite. He was very humorous and energetic for an 78 year old man! Archbishop Tutu made the sun come out on a rainy day. He made me and everyone around him happy. Hy explained to us that sports brings us together, it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, fat, thin, small or tall. We are all different and that’s a good thing too!”
Kaycee from Leyton Orient Playing for Success Centre, Newham said: “Today was a great day which provided me with the opportunity to meet Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu which will probably be the first and last time. I enjoyed listening to what the Archbishop had to say and I was very inspired by his message. For a man of his age who has been through so much I found him bubbly, active and willing to share his experiences. It’s one thing to see a great man like this on the TV but to hear him speak personally was a fantastic experience for me.”
