Every month, a different Get Set network school or college is selected for living the Olympic and Paralympic Values and for celebrating them in innovative and creative ways.
'Get Set network college of the month' has been announced!
15 Dec 2010
The ‘Get Set Network college of the month’ for December is…Warwickshire College in the West Midlands!
Here at Warwickshire College we are delighted to belong to the Get Set network, promoting the Olympic and Paralympic Values and striving to reflect them through our college activities. We are creating a legacy which will last far beyond the games themselves and become embedded in the ongoing life of the college.
Warwickshire College is committed to excellence in sport, with new facilities in Rugby and Henley-in-Arden and a ‘Sport Performance and Excellence’ course. The college ensures opportunity for all with an activity programme to encourage those who wouldn’t normally consider themselves ‘sporty’ to try out a range of different physical activities.
Warwickshire College is delighted to be the first FE college in the country to be recognised as ‘College of the Month’ by the Get Set network.
The college was selected as a result of their brilliant blog posts displaying an Olympic and Paralympic inspired mural. The mural was created by students on the Introductory Diploma in Art, Design and Media. Fourteen students planned, developed and painted the mural, which represents many different sporting and cultural influences reflecting life on the journey to the 2012 Games. It is a creative way of showing what the 2012 Games means to the students at Warwickshire College and is full of life and colour.
Lauren Matthews, 17, was one of those involved in developing the mural. She said: “We included many icons of Britain and the Games, such as the train travelling to London. The project helped us to work as a team and overcome challenges – such as how to create such a big work of art! I have developed my confidence and team work abilities as a result of creating this mural and I feel really proud.”
Forthcoming college activities include Olympic and Paralympic themed weeks and an Olympic and Paralympic fashion exhibition.
The college will receive an athlete visit as a reward for their efforts and a letter of congratulations from Seb Coe.
