The Singapore Youth Olympic Games are underway!
20 Aug 2010

The Singapore Youth Games 2010 officially kicked-off on 14th August!

The Youth Olympic Flame arrived several days earlier at the National University of Singapore for the Flame Arrival Celebration where 750 performers put on a spectacular show with a float parade and impressive pyrotechnics. The flame set off again for its 6 day relay run- the first ever in Singapore- with 2,400 torch bearers taking part. The grand finale was held at the Promotory@Marina Bay where the public witnessed the lighting of the cauldron and had a fantastic time at the evening of festivities.
Over 5,000 athletes and team officials have arrived at the Youth Olympic Village where they will be based throughout the 12 day Games. The Opening Ceremony took place on the 14th at the Float@Marina Bay, the culmination of the efforts of a workforce of 550 and over 750 rehearsal hours! The ‘Parade of Nations’ got things started and the Games were officially opened with the Olympic Oath and the lighting of the cauldron with the Torch. Young performers like beat boxer Dharni, DJ KoFlow, fire performers from Bonfire and SOKA, martial arts students from Martial House, and drummers from Drumfest put on an incredible show. The performers told the story of the perseverance and achievement of a young Nation, with surprises and special effects, all played out against the spectacular backdrop of Singapore’s stunning Marina Bay.

There are a huge number of competition venues to visit across the island, from the National Sailing Centre on the East Coast Parkway, to the Singapore Turf Riding Centre on the North Coast. Don’t forget to check out *Scape- the Youth Park, Skate Park, Youth Centre and *Scape Field- a hub for youth cultural and community activities, as well as being the venue for the YOG Basketball competition. There are 39 athletes representing GB across 16 sports, including athlete Victoria Ohuruogu, gymnast Sam Oldham and tennis player Oliver Golding. Jade Jones became Team GB’s first ever Youth Olympic Games medallist in Singapore on Tuesday, winning gold in Taekwondo. The Argentine Girls Hockey team have dominated their event, and Russia’s Viktoria Komova,15, proved why she has been hailed as one of best female gymnasts in the world, putting on a dominating performance at the Bishan Sports Hall to claim the individual all-around gold.
We are still waiting to hear if British diver Tom Daley will compete from the 21st August in the 10 and 3m diving- after a potential bicep tear- so fingers crossed for the World Champion!
Advance tickets for all events have now sold out. Some tickets can still be bought from venues for selected sports.
