The first school in the West Midlands to join the Get Set network has a VIP experience and Olympic hopeful Leone Davis visits the Olympic Park!
The West Midlands go behind the scenes with London 2012
13 Nov 2009
This has been a bumper month of London 2012 activity for the West Midlands!
On Wednesday 4 November, five representatives from the West Midlands, including Olympic hopeful, Leone Davis, joined Jonathan Edwards, Olympic Triple Jump Gold medallist and Deputy Chair of London 2012’s Nations and Regions Group, for a special tour around the Olympic Park site.
Leone said: “I was so excited to be asked to visit the Olympic Village in London and see for myself where the greatest show on Earth will take place in 2012…. It was fantastic to be talked about as a potential member of team GB and for people to be tipping me as a future medallist.”
On 13 November the West Midlands had another dose of London 2012 magic -this time, two students from Fairfax School in Sutton Coldfield spent a day in the life of Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralymic Games during his recent visit to the region.
Stephanie Clarke (17) and Joel Reader (12) had the opportunity to follow and interview the London 2012 CEO for the day. Their school has recently joined the Get Set network by demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values, and so Paul also presented Stephanie and Joel with Fairfax School’s Get Set network plaque and certificate!
Stephanie Clarke, Year 12, said: “I totally understand from today that the Olympics isn’t just about London and it isn’t just about Sport – today has inspired me! Only 3 years to go… or 141 Fridays as Paul kept saying…!”
Joel Reader, Year 8, said: “I had a great time meeting Paul Deighton and seeing ‘media operations’ up close – you wouldn’t believe how much you don’t see – being behind the scenes was great! It is amazing how funny important businessmen can be – when Paul Deighton, Dave Moorcroft and others started playing handball with a group of Year 7 students at the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry, it was hilarious.
“Trailing the BBC Midlands Today cameraman and reporter was really really good – I saw how they filmed and reported what was going on!”
