International Inspiration launches in Jordan
2 Nov 2009

Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson went to Jordan to see International Inspiration in action and saw how the project is improving school PE lessons for young people in the refugee camps, empowering girls and helping disabled children take part in sport.

On Day 1 of her trip Tanni visited the Souf camp and went to a UN school for boys to see an inclusive PE lesson for 30 boys aged 6 -9. Tanni was delighted to see that although three of the boys were disabled, they were included with the whole class activity. Tanni then met a boy called Mouayyed and his family and heard how about how important sport was for him. He has ambitions to pursue a sport and maybe compete in the Paralympics.

On Day 2, after taking part in a PE lesson and dancing with the girls from the Princess Alia school for girls which is linked to St Mary’s high School in Northern Ireland, Tanni attended the launch event held in the Paralympic Hall in Amman. The launch was led by 2 young sports leaders with 300 children, a member of the Jordanian royal family Prince Ra’ad bin Zeid, the Jordanian minister for education and Deputy President of the Jordan Olympic Committee and the President of the Jordan Paralympic Committee all present. There were some speeches, an agreement was signed between the Governments and most importantly the children had a great time doing sport activities which were led by the young people!
