Design and coin and make history!
16 Jan 2009

The Royal Mint is invited 13-19 year olds to design a new 50 pence piece using Olympic and Paralympic Cycling as their inspiration.

The competition guarantees that one lucky teenager will have their design engaraved on 50 pence pieces – you could find the coin in your pocket from March 2010.

The competition winner will receive a unique gold coin featuring their own artwork and will be invited to see his/her design being transformed into actual UK coins at the Royal Mint. The winner’s school or college will also receive £10 000!

Andrew Stafford, Chief Executive of the Royal Mint said:

This isn’t just a competition for art students. While we are looking for creative flair, entrants don’t need to be a budding Picassoto be in with a chance. We will be looking at the concept as much as the quality of the artwork. If someone comes up with a clever way of symboling cycling, we can work with them at refining the design.

This is the first time in history that a young person has had the chance to design a 50p coin that will become legal tender. It could be you!
