Young people in Medway are inspired by London 2012 Games
27 Apr 2009
Medway has become the first local authority in the country to receive a London 2012 Inspire Mark for education.
The ‘Our Medway’ project has been granted the London 2012 Inspire Mark, recognising innovative and exceptional projects directly inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Our Medway Council’s most ambitious projects in the run up to the Games. Our Medway will involve 25 000 young people from Medway’s 87 primary schools.
The four year programme, developed by the council’s education advisors and 2012 team, aims to inspire young people to live fit and active lives, value their local community and embrace excellence, friendship and respect.
Themes include citizenship, community, change and culture and schools are asked to select a particular focus for each year – choosing from heritage, sport, health, regeneration and environment.
The curriculum includes classroom-based projects and exciting study visits.
Since the launch of the programme in September, thousands of Medway school children have enjoyed visits and activities ranging from horse riding and trampolining lessons to tours of Medway’s regeneration sites and trips to the Olympic Park site.
Pupils have also been building relationships with countries with strong links to the Olympic and Paralympic Games and completing ambitious classroom-based projects.
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change”.
“The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help us achieve this vision now – three years out from the start of the Games. “
“I congratulate everyone involved in Our Medway for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”
Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services Cllr Howard Doe said: “I am thrilled and delighted by this award, as it recognises the great efforts we are making to use the 2012 Games to really involve our young people and inspire some to become the champions of tomorrow.”
