Paralympic Games in Beijing get going with impressive opening
6 Sep 2008

The Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games have launched with an amazing Opening Ceremony.

In the three-hour show, 6,000 performers and 4,000 disabled athletes from 148 countries performed in front of 91,000 spectators.

London 2012 Organising Committee Chief Executive Paul Deighton said:

‘China delivered a fantastic Opening Ceremony for the Paralympic Games. Eleven year old ballet student, Li Yue, who lost a leg four months ago in the Sichuan earthquake, held the stadium spellbound as she showed the world that despite her recent disability she has not given up on her dream to be a dancer. The entire Stadium climbed the rope with Hou Bin as he lit the Torch – an awe inspiring performance. We are totally inspired and look forward to 11 days of sport, and, for us, 11 days of learning as we prepare for the next Summer Paralympic Games in London in 2012.’
