London 2012 Olympics

The Olympic Park

An artists impression of the Olympic Park at Games time

The London 2012 Games will bring lots of people together in the biggest celebration ever in the UK.

The main centre for lots of the activities, such as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and many of the sporting events, will be the Olympic Park.

The Olympic Park

The Olympic Park covers 500 acres in East London -that’s about the size of Alton Towers!

During the Games, it will only take seven minutes to get there from the centre of London by a special train. The Olympic Park will contain the main Stadium, Aquatics Centre, and smaller stadia like the Hockey Centre and the Velopark for Cycling. The Athletes Village, where the athletes will stay during the Games, will also be in the Park.

The whole of the Park will be designed to make sure that visitors always feel part of the Games, whether they are watching the sport competitions, walking along the river bank or sitting in front of one of the big screens watching events.

Making the Olympic Park easy to use for everyone

The UK prides itself on being an inclusive country – that means giving everyone the same chances and allowing them the same access to everything. One of the most important things for the organisers of the London 2012 Games is to make sure that everyone will be able to use all the facilities. The new buildings have been designed to allow all the athletes and visitors to take part and travel easily.

Travelling to the Olympic Park

There will be 10 rail lines arriving at the Olympic Park which will be open for travellers to get to and from the Games. There will be work done to improve the underground and roads too. All public transport will be free to people who have tickets to see the Games.

The Olympic Park after the Olympic and Paralympic Games

After the Games, the Olympic Park will be turned into an urban park. The water and canals around it will be cleaned and made wider so that there is plenty of room for wildlife. There will be footpaths and cycle lanes too.

All of the buildings will be changed so that they can be reused by people to live in, or to train and play sports in.
