Which Venue?
Learn all about the different venues in the Olympic Park
ODA Construction Kit resources provided
- Information about the London 2012 venues.
- Images of the venues from planning through construction.
Find the answers to these questions which are all about the design features at the different venues. You could work in pairs.
- Which building was designed to reflect the efficient design of a bicycle? (Velodrome).
- Which building features a spectacular wave –like roof? (Aquatics Centre).
- Which stadium is surrounded by water on three sides? (Olympic Stadium).
- In which building has sustainably-sourced pine been used for the track? (Velodrome).
- If you were building a cycling track would you choose trees which were straight and tall or fat and wide? Can you say why? (Tall straight trees are more likely to give the long lengths of timber required to shape the track).
- Give an example of how water is used efficiently at the Aquatics Centre (pool water will be re-used to flush the toilets at the Aquatics Centre).
- Where can you find a biomass boiler? (The Energy Centre).
- What fuel does a biomass boiler use? (woodchips).
- Where do the athletes stay? (the Athletes’ Village).
- What facilities were built for the athletes in the Village? (Apartments, shops, restaurants, medical facilities, things to do to help them relax including large areas of open space).
- Is the Parklands only going to be suitable for human beings? (No, care has been taken to manage the area for existing and rare species of plants and animals).
Outcome
- Build up a display or make a reference book for the library/book corner about the different venues.
- Choose one of the featured venues and to write a ‘challenge question’ for their friends – of course, you have to know the answer!
Extension
Produce a poster about one of the featured venues which includes images and information about design features which reflect the aim of sustainability. For example, the use of recycled materials, maximising the use of recycled water, using ventilation shafts for fresh air and so on.
