Diggers and Dumpers

Archeologists dig on the Olympic Park

Make a fact file about the different vehicles used on the Olympic Park

ODA Construction Kit resources provided

  • Images of different vehicles that worked at the Olympic Park

Use the images and facts to find out about the construction vehicles used on the site.

  1. Download the fact file, read the descriptions of the vehicles and find a matching picture from the image bank.
  2. Discuss which of the vehicles would be used:
  • in demolition
  • in clearing the ground
  • in cleaning the soil
  • lifting heavy weights
  • laying foundations
  • keeping the site free from dust
  • working on tall buildings
  • creating a finished surface.

Outcome

Make a fact file of three or four vehicles in which they identify the vehicle and describe its function. This could be a puzzle book in which they give three clues on one page and then reveal the picture and caption on the next page.

For example:

What am I?

  • I can be used for knocking buildings down
  • I can be used for lifting heavy materials
  • I have a boom, bucket and cab on a rotating platform.

Answer: long arm digger.

Extension

  • Look at images of tower cranes and talk about the importance of counter-balancing the long arm or jib with a shorter arm and weights. Make a model of a crane which demonstrates this principle.
  • How would a winch work if it was attached to the structure? How stable is their finished model? Do you agree that a crane must be able to lift heavy weights, be stable enough not to topple and strong enough not to rupture or break?
