The London 2012 mascots - chapter 3

The London 2012 mascots - chapter 3

Rainbow Rescue grandpa

Check out the next instalment of the mascots’ journey and enjoy their Rainbow Rescue adventure.

Mascots in assembly

Use the PowerPoint presentation to introduce chapter three of the mascots’ story. The children can share Wenlock and Mandeville’s Rainbow Rescue, and meet some London 2012 athletes along the way.

You might like to recap the story so far by showing the films of the first two chapters and talk about some of the new things the mascots have tried, the places they’ve visited and the people they’ve met on their journey to London 2012. How have they seen and lived the Olympic and Paralympic Values?

Rainbow Rescue in the classroom

The discussion starters and activity ideas given in the notes at the bottom of the PowerPoint slides focus on literacy, art and design, personal development, citizenship and the Olympic and Paralympic Values. To further develop these themes in the classroom, you could:

  • Talk about and record in words or drawings how the mascots and the athletes helped the children build a new library. Display the work in your own library or reading corner.
  • Ask the children to say, write or draw what they think will happen next as the mascots get closer and closer to the Olympic Stadium and the London 2012 Games.
  • Find out more about the athletes and their sports featured in the film. Help the children to create some PowerPoint slides of their own about these athletes and add them to the assembly presentation, or ask them to make up a quiz about Olympic and Paralympic sports to challenge their friends.
  • This chapter of the mascots’ story features several different modes of transport. Can the children spot them all? Which ones have they used and can they describe the journey they took?
