Torch Relay - Mum's big day - 47.96kb
The sun is streaming through the curtains. It is a beautiful morning. Max feels something jump on his bed. It is Billy, the dog.
‘Billy, you silly dog!’ Max says as he gives his favourite dog a big cuddle.
Max and Billy go downstairs for breakfast.
‘Morning Max, morning Billy,’ says Mum. Mum is very excited. It is a very special day.
‘You’re up early,’ says Max.
‘I couldn’t sleep. I’m so excited!’ says Mum. ‘I’m all ready for my big day.’
The Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Max’s town today and Max’s Mum has been chosen to carry the Olympic Flame through the town. Max’s Mum was chosen from lots and lots of people because she works really hard in the town to raise money for people who are very ill. Last year, she raised over one thousand pounds by jumping out of an aeroplane! And she is scared of heights!
Everybody she’d helped had written letters to say how kind and helpful she was and that she deserved a special treat, and how lovely it would be if she could carry the Olympic Flame in her town.
Max was so proud when he found out his Mum had been chosen.
‘This is for you, Mum,’ says Max as he handed her an envelope.
‘What is it?’ asks Mum.
‘Just a card I made for you for your special day,’ says Max.
Mum is so happy. She gives Max a big cuddle and Billy the dog joins in too!
The main streets in town are packed with people lining the roads. They are cheering and waving flags. The town has been decorated with brightly coloured posters and banners, flags and streamers. Everybody is excited. Even the parks and gardens look lovely with brightly coloured flowers, especially planted for the London 2012 Games. Everyone in the town is so proud that their town has been chosen. The Torch Relay will go around the country and 8,000 different people will carry the Flame for about 300m each. Max’s Mum is one of the lucky ones!
Mum is in position. Max and Billy are in the crowd with Grandpa. Billy nudges his black nose through the crowd in front so he can get a good view.
Mum is getting nervous. ‘I hope I don’t fall in front of all these people,’ she thinks to herself.
‘Come on Mum!’ shouts Max from the crowd. He waves a big flag. Mum waves back and blows him a kiss.
Mum looks behind her. She can see a man, the Torchbearer, coming towards her holding the Olympic Torch. Mum’s torch is not lit yet. When the man reaches Mum, he lights her unlit torch with the Flame from his torch. He smiles and watches Mum as she proudly carries the Flame.
Mum’s feet start to move as she begins to run. Wow! What a feeling, holding the Olympic Torch and hearing all the cheers from the crowd. Mum smiles from ear to ear.
Max watches his Mum from the crowd. Grandpa and Max are clapping and cheering louder than anyone, and Billy barks too.
Mum can hear them as she runs with the Flame, holding it high above
her. What an amazing moment!
Another lady is waiting in a wheelchair and Mum runs towards her. Mum uses the Flame she is carrying to light the Flame on the torch that the lady is holding. Everybody claps.
Max, Billy and Grandpa rush over to Mum and give her big hugs.
‘You are the best mum in the world!’ says Max, ‘and I am the proudest little boy in the world.’
‘Yes,’ barks Billy, ‘and I’m the proudest dog in the world!’ Woof, woof!
‘And I am the luckiest mum in the world,’ says Mum with a big smile on her face as they all walk into the crowd to enjoy the celebrations!
