Challenge B – Prepare the Guide’s Notes
The visitors from Rio will have tours of these venues and will have a guide with them throughout their time in London.
It is planned to take them to seven of the Olympic and Paralympic venues:
- Olympic Stadium.
- Aquatics Centre.
- Velodrome.
- IBC/MPC.
- Athletes’ Village.
- Energy Centre.
- Parklands.
Please prepare notes for the guide who will be working with the delegates. He/she will need:
- Information about each venue – key facts and ‘expert ‘information as well as interesting stories to keep them entertained; for example, that a hawk is used at the Stadium to control the number of pigeons!
- The delegates are particularly interested in sustainability – so any information about sustainable design or the use of sustainable materials would be particularly relevant.
- As the guide is also on the coach with delegates travelling from their hotel to the Olympic Park and between some of the venues, you should also include any information about major tourist attractions that they will see en route.
- Delegates will ask about the transport improvements that have been made including the developments and improvements at King’s Cross/St Pancras, DLR and Stratford station. Provide the guide with factual information about what has taken place.
- Information about the ODA and LOCOG.
Resources for guiding notes
To help you with your research, the ODA have provided you with links to resources and an overview of their content:
- A video about Cleaning the Olympic Park – which started in 2007, how the site is to be used – including a bit of history about the site, the industry that was there and the waste that was left to be cleared away.
- A video about Stratford Station showing numbers of people travelling, how it was, what is happening and its contribution to legacy.
- A video about sustainability which is at the heart of the London 2012 project.
