Resources for construction challenge
To help you with your research for each phase of construction, links to resources and an overview of their content is provided.
Design
What sustainable design elements have been included, measures to ensure optimum performance of building, source and type of materials used (sustainable or not).
All change at Stratford station. Numbers of people travelling. How it was, what is happening and its contribution to legacy. 10 new staircases and nine new lifts, new platform, train doors will open both sides – unique (Useful to consider impact on Stratford town centre).
Sustainability at heart of the project. Design and quality of buildings, impact on performance (athletes and buildings!). Approaches used (for example, oil treatment, reduction in steel, rainwater harvesting.) ODA setting a benchmark for the industry – raising a bar for the future.
Tour of site. Useful introduction. Focus on quality and pride.
Stretch target: 50% of materials to be delivered to park by rail or water including granite, sand, recycled glass, limestone. (Reuse of glass to reduce concrete). Aim of minimising impacts on local/national road network, minimising pollution, reducing emissions. How: opening of waterways (Three Mills Lock) and dredging (removing cars and shopping trolleys). Waste from site also goes via waterways. Hope that government and public sector learn from the good practice exemplified here by ODA.
Useful in terms of marketing/PR. Some good pictures of roof lines.
Ian Thorpe and Rebecca Adlington at the Aquatics Centre. A useful stimulus for involvement of others, such as Lord Coe involving athletes so that they can have confidence and ‘talk up’ the design. The importance of involvement/consultation and PR.
Focus on Aquatics Centre. Use with video below. Used to be ‘fridge mountain’ – and look at it now.
What is being done to ensure sustainability Includes statistics.
Olympic Park flythrough 2009 – good images of the site pre-construction and in the very early stages. Focus on ‘big five’ venues. Athletes’ Village as new homes. Regeneration of Stratford.
Spotlight on the Stadium – includes information on design features at the Olympic Stadium.
The Olympic Stadium, one year into construction.
Power on for Park utilities – information about the importance and construction of the Energy Centre. Focus on utilities.
Design of Athletes Village – look and feel.
Designing for Legacy – architects and designers visit the Olympic Park and talk though the design.
Use of sustainable materials, importance of accuracy (zero tolerance of trusses), concept of pride in work, importance of individual roles on the site.
Logistics planning
How the materials are getting on and off site, what account has been taken of nearby residents/schools/facilities, health and safety planning.
