Keep students inspired by the Torch Relay with these ‘five minute fillers’- just right for tutor time or the beginnings and ends of lessons.
Try these activities around the Olympic Torch Relay. They should take no more than five minutes each.
1. Ytr meos amsangra. Or, try some anagrams.
How many of these anagrams of locations on the Olympic Torch Relay route can you solve in three minutes?
UEDDNE (Dundee)
PLEROLIVO (Liverpool)
CIPSHIW (Ipswich)
NGUYESRE (Guernsey)
BATSELF (Belfast)
SRELICEET (Leicester)
GALNEI (Ealing)
WASELTNEC (Newcastle)
TONUNAT (Taunton)
THPROSOUMT (Portsmouth)
2. ‘I nominate…’ Ask the students to identify their own personal hero who they think could be nominated as a Torchbearer. They have just 30 seconds to convince the class.
3. Word puzzles: It takes three steps to get from the word ‘run’ to ‘win’ by changing just one letter at each step e.g. run, sun, sin and win. Challenge the students to get from ‘Torch’ to ‘Perth’ in just three steps (Torch, porch, perch, Perth). How many steps does it take to get from ‘race’ to ‘gold’? (race, rack, sack, sick, silk, silt, gilt, gold). Can they make up other word step puzzles using words connected to the Torch Relay, for example Flame, Relay, light and so on?
