- A sustainable Olympic Park.
Outcome
Use the information in the ODA Construction Kit to write a press release which informs the public about the development of the Parklands. Remember the facts are really important. The specific points below should be answered as part of your response.
The Parklands
This is how the ODA created a park which can be used by the community after the Games.
(The southern part of the Park has a festival atmosphere with riverside gardens, markets, events, cafes and bars. The northern area provides a quieter public space and habitats for hundreds of existing and rare species.)
The ODA made sure the trees planted were suitable for the area.
(The trees were carefully selected to ensure they are ‘future proof’ against climate change. They are mostly native species such as ash, alder, willow, birch, hazel, cherry, poplar, London plane and lime.)
The Parklands are accessible to everyone through the following measures.
(The gradients of the paths are accessible to everyone and views are maintained of the venues and landmarks in the surrounding area.)
The Parklands will minimise carbon footprint and impact on climate change in the following ways.
(There are hectares of green spaces, which are designed to reduce the risk of flooding in the river valley and enrich the biodiversity of the Lower Lea Valley.)
Extension
- Imagine that you have the outline brief to create new parklands around the Olympic Park site for use by the community after the Games. Draw up plans for the development of this site. You want to preserve delicate habitats for plants and animals, minimise the risk of flooding to the new housing areas and include family-friendly activities.
