Three five-minute fillers

Torch relay lighting the flame in the temple of Hera

Keep the students inspired by the Torch relay with these ‘five-minute fillers’.

Three exciting five-minute fillers!

  • The Torch Relay begins at Land’s End on 18 May 2012 and ends at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July. Ask the students to plot 10 days of the 70-day route that would include a visit within 10 miles of their home.
  • Ask the students to think about their own personal heroes, for example, people in their community who have inspired them in some way. Ask for volunteers to give a 30-second nomination speech in which they give reasons why their nominee should be considered as a Torchbearer.
  1. During the ancient Games, a sacred flame burned continually on the altar of the goddess, Juno. (False – the goddess was called Hera.)

  3. The last Torchbearer lights a cauldron back at the Temple of Hera. (False – the Cauldron is lit at the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium.)
