London 2012 Olympics

Drama and media studies

With the eyes of the world on London in 2012, it is expected that 6,000 members of the world’s press will be reporting on the Games. The event will also be displayed on a number of ‘live sites’ across the UK. It is therefore difficult to imagine a higher profile media event than The Games.

The London 2012 Olympic Handover Ceremony

Try these project ideas linking Drama and Media Studies to the enterprise of 2012:

Create your own brand
Older/more able students can tackle the create your own brand activity. This project takes students through the essentials of branding, and why it’s so important to business in general and London 2012 in particular. Their task is to imagine that their ‘company’ has been commissioned to produce a name, logo and brand profile for a new international festival of friendship. The festival will be a week-long event incorporating music, theatre and talks by authors and personalities.

Create a film
Students could also work as a production team to create a short film inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Team roles could include: creative designer, writer, project manager, performers and producer. Teams could research funding streams to see if they could make the film for real, work out how much it would cost to produce in-house, and make a decision about the best option. They could also practise making a pitch presentation to a possible funder or media outlet.

Design work linked to the Olympic and Paralympic Values
Why not challenge teams of students to submit designs for your school/college website showing how you reflect the Olympic and Paralympic Values? Older or more able students can also demonstrate their understanding of common web tools such as hit counters, and learn how to maximise visitors through search engine optimisation and give a short presentation of their findings.

Cultural Olympiad
Interested in more opportunities to get involved with the cultural aspects of the Games? Ask the students to find out about the Cultural Olympiad and to plan an art project.
