Some practical ideas for using the London 2012 Games as the launch pad for creative enterprise projects linked to art and design.
London 2012 is about more than sport. There are great opportunities for children and young people to engage in music and art projects, and to take on challenges that will flex their entrepreneurial muscles.
Try these ideas for starters:
The Values kites challenge
The Values kites challenge is designed originally for younger children, however there’s no reason why students of all ages can’t be challenged to build their own kites in just 20 minutes and 12 seconds (20:12.)
What ideas can the students come up with for using their finished kites? e.g. hosting a kite festival, selling them during a special event as a fund-raiser or using them as the basis of a design for a London 2012 page on your school website?
Create your own brand
Older/more able students can tackle the Create your own brand activity.
All budding entrepreneurs need to abide by brand and style guidelines. In this resource, students are asked to imagine they have been commissioned to produce a name, logo and brand profile for a new international festival of friendship. The festival will be a week-long event incorporating music, theatre and talks by authors and personalities. The project guides students through some important aspects of branding and the role it plays in today’s marketplace.
Have you got what it takes?
In ‘Have you got what it take?’ students work in teams to take on the role of a company ‘pitching’ to become an approved Pre-Games Training Camp in the run up to London 2012. A brilliant presentation to an Olympic or Paralympic sports team is crucial if their company is to win the contract. As part of the resources, students need to get creative and develop a mood board to promote their pitch.
Cultural Olympiad
Interested in more opportunities to get involved with the cultural aspects of the Games? Ask the students to find out about the Cultural Olympiad to plan an art project.
