A step-by-step guide to running the activity

Read these guidelines to help you make the most of your event.

1. Introduce the activity and show slides 1 – 5.

2. Before you ask the children to work in small groups to come up with ideas about the type of event they would like to hold you might like to set some guidelines. This will help them to make a judgement about what is possible. It is particularly useful if you want to do this as a real life exercise.

Timescale

  • When will the event take place? Is there a date in the diary for the children to aim for?
  • How long are you going to allow? Are you thinking about a short period like lunchtime or twenty minutes after school, or are you aiming for a longer session like a whole afternoon or even a series of events?

Location

  • Do you want their ideas to be school based or do you want them to go out into the community or make links with another school?

Budget

  • Is there any money available for them to use to get a project going?
  • Do you want them to raise money for something specific?

3. To give the children ideas about the type of event they can hold show them slides 6 – 11.

4. Look at slide 12 and then put the children into small groups so that they can talk through their ideas.

5. Listen to the presentations and then decide on the fairest way to decide on the final event. Slide 13 will help with this.

6. Now decide on a team name. You could do this as a whole class or once again ask the children to come up with ideas in their small groups and then take a class vote.

7. There are now several activities which can be done by everyone or alternatively you can split the class into groups and allocate different activities:

8. Once you have completed the activities and staged your event then complete the evaluations sheet

9. Be sure to let the Get set team know what you have been doing by blogging about your event.
