In this activity the children work together as a Get Set Events Team. Their challenge is to plan a special event in their community which is linked to the London 2012 Games.
Many schools in the Get Set network are keen to run a special event to celebrate the forthcoming London 2012 Games, and this resource provides a simple step-by-step guide to help you include your special event as part of enterprise education.
This activity is especially recommended for children aged between 9 – 11 years. It could be adapted for younger children.
Delivery
The resource is designed for flexible delivery, either over a series of short lessons, or as a whole day.
Ideally, you will use the guide to help the children think through all the processes involved in running a real social enterprise event.
The activities are delivered through a PowerPoint presentation supported by guide sheets and activity sheets for the children so that they can practise core enterprise skills.
Introducing the activity
Everything you need to introduce the activity to the children is included in a short PowerPoint Presentation.

Organising a major event like the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a huge task. Just think of all the jobs that have to be done before, during and after the Games, and how many people it takes to see that everything goes to plan. It is a huge team effort to make sure that everything is ready on time.
Now is your chance to show that you have the skills to plan an exciting event.
Ok, we’re not asking you to stage a global event like the Games but we are challenging you to stage a fun event in your community which is linked to the London 2012 Games.
You and your friends are going to form a Get Set Events Team.
Your first job is to decide what type of event to hold.
Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
- A festival of music or theatre; a chance for performers, friends and people who live near the school to show off their talents
- A special sporting event; this might be a fun day for all the family or perhaps an opportunity to try a new activity or a session of family games.
- A fundraiser like a bring and buy stall or a sponsored event for something you care about
- An event which is themed to the lives of people in another country; you might even be able to link up to a school in another part of the world.
These are just a few suggestions and it’s up to you to decide what to do. But there are three important things to highlight:
1. Make sure that sustainability is at the heart of your event. This means you’ve thought about the impact of what you do on the environment – even in quite small ways. For example, it could mean you’ve asked people to walk to the event, to share transport if they have to travel, or you’re using recycled materials wherever possible.
2. Your event should show that you understand the importance of the Olympic Values of Respect, Friendship and Excellence and the Paralympic Values of Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality .How will people experience them?
3. You must show that you have thought about how much it would cost to stage your event. What will you need to pay for and do you want to get your money back?
