London 2012 Olympics

Special school

Read an example Get Set network application submitted by a special school.

In no more than 200 words please tell us why you would like to join the Get Set network.

As a special school for children aged 5-19 years we have a unique opportunity to inspire students and staff to become part of the London 2012 Games and influence whole school learning.
The resources available on the Get Set website will support the development of our curriculum leading up to 2012 and will allow us to stage assemblies and one day whole school events based on the Olympic and Paralympic Games and their Values.
As a Sports College, we want to spread the legacy of the Games across partner schools and have begun work on doing so. Being a Get Set network school and encouraging and supporting others to apply to become Get Set network schools is one of our major aims.
Once approved as a member of the Get Set network, we would also relish the opportunity to have the chance to win a tour of the Olympic Park.

In no more than 200 words, please summarise what you and your students have done/are doing to demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

The main ethos of our school is about living together and working together. As a special school, the promotion of how we prepare the children for future life is paramount. We are always looking for ‘real’ opportunities to use to reinforce quality behavior and Values. To this end, we are delivering a number of assemblies in the school about the Olympic and Paralympic Values. We see this as something that will filter across the school throughout the curriculum, in playground and out of school.
Based on an idea by a group of Year 11 students, the school is carrying out 5 whole school challenges between February 2010 and July 2012. Each challenge focuses on the Olympic and Paralympic Values and places an emphasis on whole school involvement and cross curricular links. Each challenge is colour coded corresponding to the 5 Olympic ring colours. As the challenges take place, the process is being recorded via a London 2012 display.

In no more than 200 words please tell us what plans you have to continue this work in the future.

We will ensure all students know, understand, believe in and demonstrate the Values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games by linking our enrichment programmes and celebration assemblies to the Values. Additionally, teachers will work with students to ensure that their curriculum is enhanced by using the Get Set online resources. We will ensure that all students are involved in recording and publishing their achievements through blogs and case studies. Our young disabled sports leaders will also play a key part in delivering the Values to main stream partner school children and wider community groups. We are also excited about the international aspect of the Games and making links with schools from around the world.
