With the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games fast approaching and some students oblivious of the enormity of the event, it is time for action! We would like to join the Get Set network so that we are able to access free resources and updates. We would like to use Get Set to promote the Olympic and Paralympic Values to our students and gain acknowledgement for the positive work that we are carrying out related to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
We have set up our own Olympic and Paralympic Committee to raise awareness of the Olympics and Paralympics within school and the wider local community. This student committee went to the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust Olympic Conference and felt inspired to spread the word.
In no more than 200 words please summarise what you and your students have done/are doing to demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values.
Young Ambassadors have led assemblies for younger students based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values using the London 2012 promotional video and resources from the Get Set website. The Young Ambassadors have also worked with pupils at partner primary schools to create a Values flag and an Olympic oath to use at a Year 4 mini Games festival.
We made a link with a school in Vancouver in the build up to the 2010 Winter Games so that students could make pen pals! Our students also got to pose questions to Paralympic athletes as they watched a live webcast from Canada.
As part of a diversity week held at the school, students thought about the Values during their PE lessons and created posters based on these. The PE department selected winning posters to use as the basis for an eye-catching display outlining the Values.
We have also ran themed workshops focusing on the enterprise of London 2012. Students have been learning about product design and advertising in the context of London 2012.
In no more than 200 words please tell us what plans you have to continue this work in the future.
We are determined to keep the momentum going right up until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We are planning to run some exciting citizenship activities linked to the Games. We are looking forward to running another Olympic-themed Enterprise Focus Week, in the hope that students will experience ‘Olympic Fever’ during that week even if they haven’t before! We would like to increase interest and participation in sport by including more Olympic and Paralympic themes in PE lessons. We will also be working with a partner school to create a billboard display about the London 2012 Games.
