London 2012 Paralympics

Primary school

Read an example Get Set network application submitted by a primary school.

In no more than 200 words please tell us why you would like to join the Get Set network.

We would like to join the Get Set network so that we can raise children’s awareness of London 2012, making them enthusiastic about this historic event. We would like to focus on the Olympic and Paralympic Values and current athletes in order to further motivate our students to be the best that they can be. It will also create opportunities to encourage children and their families to participate in a wider range of sport on a regular basis.
We would like to use the Get Set network to share resources and ideas with other schools and gain support to coordinate an ambitious European project to be based on sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Values. We are hoping to achieve a level of global cohesion through our Olympic and Paralympic activities.

In no more than 200 words please summarise what you and your students have done/are doing to demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

We have used an assembly from the Get Set website to introduce the Olympic and Paralympic Values to our students. We reward students for living the Olympic and Paralympic Values with gold medals. Some of our students have been inspired by Usain Bolt so they have created an advertising campaign to promote running as part of a healthy active lifestyle. A group of students were lucky enough to be taken to the Paralympic World Cup. With limited tickets available for the visit, children had to use their best persuasive writing skills, explaining why they deserved to go and which Values they had demonstrated.
We have even had the chance to present the work that we have been doing as part of Get Set to Seb Coe along with other schools that are members of the Get Set network in Bradford. Some of our students even got to compete in an athletic event with a real gold-medalist spectator!

In no more than 200 words please tell us what plans you have to continue this work in the future.

We have a thriving pupil led school council with representatives from every class. The council meets weekly and, although attended by the Headteacher, it is run by the pupils for the pupils. The school council will be a great vehicle to plan, evaluate and disseminate all of our London 2012 inspired activities. Our school council is very keen to make friends with a school close to the Olympic Park. They have said ‘We would like to write letters and emails and send them pictures of all the things that we do here in Cornwall. We would love it if they could come and visit our school, and we would go to London to visit them’.
We are planning to create a dance based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values and we are looking forward to researching some of the countries that will be competing in London 2012 to further develop our student’s open and inclusive outlook on life.
