London 2012 Olympics

Infant school

Read an example Get Set network application submitted by an infant school.

In no more than 200 words please tell us why you would like to join the Get Set network.

We would like to join the Get Set network so that we can further enhance and enrich the school ethos by embedding the Olympic and Paralympic Values. We will use the Values to inspire and motivate our pupils in the run up to London 2012.
The school already has a positive sporting culture, having achieved awards for providing 120 minutes of curriculum PE time per week and using non-teaching time to help children understand their bodies and being active, with pupils having the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of extra-curricular sporting and lifestyle clubs to inspire them to make healthy lifestyle choices. We believe that Get Set will help us to build on these firm foundations to promote the Olympic and Paralympic Values and get children who may not have participated in clubs and groups to take part. We have already begun to target these children and embed the Values through our sports clubs and well-being lunchtime groups.

In no more than 200 words please summarise what you and your students have done/are doing to demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

We started our project by devising a plan to help promote the Olympic and Paralympic Values within the school, and shared these plans with students. The students are so excited that they have contributed to it and shaped the activities that are being delivered.
We have already delivered an ‘Olympics Week’ using the Olympic and Paralympic Values in a range of classes as a way of encouraging participation from the children. We have created a display to remind the children what the Values are all about and we give certificates to students that are living at least one of the Olympic or Paralympic Values.
Students have been using the Olympic and Paralympic Games as inspiration during art and drama lessons fosusing on the subject ‘life as an athlete’.

In no more than 200 words please tell us what plans you have to continue this work in the future.

We are going to introduce a reward and recognition scheme based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values. Each week we will focus on a different Value starting with the Olympic Value of Friendship. We plan to run our own mini torch relay and run another Olympic and Paralympic themed week off the back of this. We will look at the history of the Olympics, sporting heroes, mascots and sports challenges.
We currently deliver cultural days, but as we get closer to the Games we will focus in on countries that are taking part in London 2012. We will focus in on the motto ‘5 rings, 1 world.’
Our Family Festivals, including sport and dance, will have an Olympic theme leading up to 2012 and we are planning a Mini Games in July 2012. There will be a focus on students achieving their personal best. We plan to create a sculpture in the school garden as a lasting legacy.
