As a hospital school we are privileged to work with children and young people from all over the world. Our catchment area is not determined by local authority boundaries but by the reputation, skill and expertise of the surgeons, doctors and nurses that work for the Trust. As a school we want to be able to tap into the richness and diversity of the 2012 Olympic Games so that we can create lasting memories and opportunities for our pupils, patients and families. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed!

In no more than 200 words please summarise what you and your students have done/are doing to demonstrate a commitment to one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

We already work closely with sports foundations and on a weekly basis we take part in inclusive games and PE suited to a hospital environment. All children aged 5-18+ are included regardless of need. Some students take part in the school rooms on the wards and others via video links from their beds. For many chronically ill children this is the first time they have managed to participate in games and P.E. Our sports coaches personify the Olympic Values of friendship, respect and excellence in engaging and motivating children and young people with chronic illness. Their excellence, friendship and respect never waivers and they consistently uphold the core values of the Olympic Movement whilst at the same time always being perceptive to the needs of the child and family. They have begun to weave in influences from the Olympic and Paralympic Games into their coaching sessions.

Our all inclusive, rising 5 – 18+, weekly games sessions are now firmly embedded in the School’s curriculum and timetable. We have recently started to use online games consoles so that children in isolation can join in the fun from the comfort of their own cubicles. We are also working with a number of organizations to ensure that these games are accessible to children and young people with a range of conditions and disabilities. Our P.E and sports sessions have been so successful that other hospital schools are now developing their own Games type events. We hope to be able to extend this aspect of the curriculum by providing CPD and training to other interested schools. We are also planning to run some more international events focusing on London 2012.
