London 2012 Paralympics

St Breock CP School

St Breock case study

Making the curriculum come alive.

Why Get Set?

St Breock CP School (Cornwall, South West) saw the fantastic opportunity that London 2012 offered and wanted to inspire everyone in the school community to embrace the Games. The school had already held an Olympic week and the Olympic and Paralympic Values were reflected in St Breock’s ethos.

Class topics based on the Games fitted easily within the school’s creative curriculum. Joining Get Set meant access to a range of activities to further enhance this work. Olympic Ambassadors were chosen from each year group to help the school on its Road to London 2012, with its mission for all children to enjoy the build up and excitement that the Games would bring to the country.

The Journey So Far

St Breock organised its own mini Olympic Games week with children representing different countries. Afternoons focused on sport while morning sessions centred on Games-related cross-curricular learning.

An impressive Red Carpet Event introduced guests to an award-winning Year Five Mascot DVD and to the school’s Road to London 2012 plans. Children and parents dressed up for the event and guests were full of praise.

Children welcomed Olympian Pinky Le Grelle who talked about her sport of Skeet Shooting, local MP Dan Rogerson visited to look at work taking place and a message of congratulation was received from rowing silver medallist Annie Vernon.

Other exciting opportunities have included:

  • Choreographing an Olympic ceremony dance
  • Designing an emblem for Annie Vernon
  • Eating Olympic Bistro lunches!
An eye-catching display board keeps everyone in school informed and involved.

    Positive Values

Children have been particularly engaged through the variety of activities and the cross curricular nature of work based around London 2012. Whole school events have brought the school together and children have been inspired by counting down to the Games and by athletes they have met.

    And the highlights for students?

    • “When the athletes get a medal and their national anthem is played and the national flag is raised just for you it must be the best feeling”
    • “You see people from around the world all competing together and showing the values of the Olympics and their country”
    • “The Olympic Games inspires me because I want to be in the Olympics when I’m older that’s why I try my best at sports now.”

    Towards 2012

St Breock aims to build on the buzz created by the Red Carpet Launch, further involve members of the community and continue making the curriculum come to life. It is planning a residential trip to London before the Games giving children the chance to see where everything will happen.

Through signing up to Global Gateway links are being established to enable children to learn about countries from across the globe. St Breock has also linked with Surf Action a local charitable trust which helps amputees from the forces.

By London 2012 St Breock wants children to be engaged and excited by the Games, be aware of the culturally diverse range of athletes being brought together and to understand how athletes have had to prepare and commit to the competition. Plans are for children to experience as many Olympic and Paralympic sports as possible and to meet more athletes.
