Living the Values Whitcliffe Mount

Whitcliffe Mount Business and Enterprise College, Cleckheaton

Can do

Year 9 sports leaders from Whitcliffe Mount set up an exciting Games related roadshow for primary and middle school children in their local area.
The day began with an opening ceremony led by the students where the younger children were introduced to the Olympic and Paralympic Values, watched dances and took part in singing. The children were also shown a film about the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Creativity and innovation

The sports leaders designed mascots and dressed up in costume to represent each of the seven Values. So, for example, Roger the Respectful Rabbit represented ‘respect’ and talked to the children about what they thought it might mean.

The children were also divided into groups and each given a country, flag and t-shirt to represent during the course of the day. The children participated in a variety of Olympic and Paralympic sports such as Wheelchair Basketball, Boccia and Boxing.

Linking up to the Values

In the afternoon, the children worked on a series of activities linked to the Values, designing logos and flags, taking part in an Olympic quiz and finding out ‘Where’s my country?’. Awards were given for the winning team and for representing the Values well.

One young leader commented, ‘Having the experience of running something like this is brilliant, it will set you up.’

Well done, team! We love the idea of Roger the Respectful rabbit, and of older students helping younger children to understand what those Values words actually mean. Perfect for an application to join the Get Set network
