Skinner’s Company’s School for Girls, Hackney

Skinners’ Company’s School for Girls ran an Olympic Carnival for their primary school partners, where the focus was on the Olympic and Paralympic Values and the rich diversity of the Hackney community.
150 Year 5 students from six different schools participated in the Olympic Carnival and enjoyed:

  • An Olympic Games trade fair organised and run by primary and secondary students of the Young Chamber Council
  • A mini-Paralympic Games led by Skinners’ Company’s School Junior Sports Leader and Young Chamber Council
  • A multi-cultural exhibition including flags produced by the primary school children.

Innovation and creativity

The project team devised and ran a series of workshops based on core enterprise attributes including team games and challenges, the merits of fair trade and the supply chain process. For the opening ceremony, the younger children designed and made flags based on their own ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Each student was given a book of vouchers to the value of £2 to spend at the trade fair and a goody bag to commemorate the occasion
Integrating the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

To promote friendship and excellence, teams were organised in mixed-school groups. One hundred and fifty bibs were used in the five colours of the Olympic rings with each colour representing a Value. Courage, inspiration, equality and determination were reflected in the activities themselves.

Enterprise skills

In planning, organising and running their Values carnival the students from Skinners’ practised essential enterprise skills including: the management of change and risk, team work and problem solving, financial, economic and business understanding and leadership. The primary children practised managing money and experienced the friendship and respect of people older than themselves.

Building on the good work

The Sknners’ Company’s school has since hosted a Get enterprising workshop where local schools pitted their wits against each other in teams of four to take part in the BP Trading Game [Link] The school’s involvement in Get Enterprising qualifies them for Get Set network accreditation and all the associated benefits that come with it. Excellent work!
