A case study on Preston School’s enterprise event.
The drive to make things happen
When Year 10 students from Preston School and Young Chamber decided to run an Olympic Games-style event for Somerset students, they needed to get organised. They decided on a date and location for the event, designed invitations and contacted Olympians to attend and support the event. They also had to source all the equipment for the day and design the marketing.
On the day of the event, the students were on site at 6.30am so they could be interviewed live on television. After setting up and greeting the sports representatives and guest schools, the Games began.
Professional sportspeople ran workshops on football, dance, hockey, fencing, team-building and healthy eating. Students had to take part in two workshops of their choice.
Creativity and innovation
Following the workshops, students gathered to watch the opening ceremony. Two primary schools had choreographed dances and Olympians Sam Weale and David Hacker talked about their experiences at the Olympic Games. All the students took their flags and did a lap of honour before competing in a number of Olympic events against each school.
An in-school media team covered the event and created a newsletter for all the participating schools.
Finally, the students gathered to see the awards and the closing ceremony, and the day was a huge success.
Living the Values
Students developed friendships with other students from several different schools and were inspired by the stories of Olympians Sam Weale and David Hacker.
The Get enterprising team was impressed by the scope of this enterprise project and the fact that it worked across so many diferent curriculum subjects. Getting involved in Get enterprising opens doors to more challenges, competitions and opportunities. Keep on blogging!
