Home-made bags at Fairfax School

A case study on Fairfax School, West Midlands

Starting with the Values

Students from Fairfax School created a series of ‘Values Collages’ and went on to design, create and sell merchandise linked to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

Fairfax introduced the idea of ‘Values Collages’ across their school by allocating one of the Olympic or Paralympic Values to each year group: Year 7- friendship, Year 8 – equality, Year 9 – respect, Year 10 – inspiration, Year 11 – determination, Year 12 – courage and Year 13 – excellence.

Creativity

The students worked in tutor groups to create collages that were displayed in the school hall and will be used as the inspiration for a wall mural design in the school playground.

Students from Years 7 to 10 designed and created phone charms, bracelets, t-shirts, balls, badges and novelty bags that reflected the Olympic and Paralympic Values as well as being targeted at a teenage market.

Financial capability

Later in the year, all the products were packaged and priced by students and were sold at the school’s fiftieth anniversary celebrations. The house raising the closest amount to £2012 won Fairfax’s ‘Enterprising Olympics’ house trophy.

Can do attitude

Congratulations to Fairfax from the Get enterprising team on your successful application to join the Get Set network! We love the idea of year groups being allocated a specific Value and look forward to sharing more of your inspirational Get enterprising projects.

Well done to your two young journalists for their excellent interview with LOCOG’s Chief Executive, Paul Deighton, by the way!
